Introducing ISMED-CLIM: Real-World Solutions for Climate and Health Resilience in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean region is increasingly affected by climate change, with rising temperatures, air pollution, and extreme weather posing growing health risks. The ISMED-CLIM project addresses these challenges through practical, evidence-based interventions that aim to improve health outcomes and strengthen healthcare system resilience.

ISMED-CLIM brings together partners from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal to test and refine climate-health solutions in real-life conditions. These efforts are being implemented through five dedicated Living Labs, which focus on:

  • Protecting outdoor workers from heat stress

  • Supporting pregnant women during extreme weather

  • Reducing risks for older adults with hypertension

  • Preventing the spread of vector-borne diseases

  • Improving the resilience of healthcare systems to climate-related events

 

What makes ISMED-CLIM different?


The project combines environmental and health expertise with digital innovation. Key tools include:

  • An AI-based Early Warning System for heat, air pollution, and disease risk

  • A Citizen App for real-time alerts and health tracking

  • A Policy Dashboard for supporting data-informed public health planning

  • A central Knowledge Platform integrating forecasts and Living Lab results

  • Surveillance systems for monitoring zoonotic disease risks

 

Project goals include:

  • Improving understanding of climate-health risks in the Mediterranean

  • Engaging citizens and stakeholders in adaptation efforts

  • Testing and scaling interventions that protect vulnerable groups

  • Enhancing emergency preparedness in health systems

  • Supporting policymaking through accessible, evidence-based data

 

By helping communities anticipate and respond to extreme weather and pollution, ISMED-CLIM aims to reduce hospitalizations and mortality linked to climate events. The project also supports better working conditions, particularly for those exposed to outdoor environments, and equips health systems with the tools to plan and act effectively.
