Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili / Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR)

Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili (PSPV) is a public healthcare institution located in Barcelona, Spain, providing intermediate care, primary care, and specialized services focused particularly on aging populations and chronic conditions.

PSPV collaborates closely with the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), one of the leading biomedical research centres in Spain. Within this collaboration, the Research on Aging, Frailty and Transitions (REFiT) group conducts multidisciplinary research aimed at understanding and improving the health, autonomy, and quality of life of older adults.

The group focuses on promoting healthy aging, preventing avoidable hospitalizations, and supporting person-centered, integrated care in the community. Its work also addresses safe and early transitions from hospital to home, ensuring that older adults can maintain independence and quality of life during periods of health vulnerability.

Role in the Project

Within the ISMED-CLIM project, PSPV and VHIR contribute to the implementation of Living Lab 3 (LL3), which focuses on older adults with hypertension, a population particularly vulnerable to climate-related health risks.

The partners support clinical research evaluating the impact of extreme heat and air pollution on cardiovascular health in older populations. Through Living Lab activities, the research team participates in the design and execution of studies assessing the effectiveness of early warning systems, monitoring tools, and behavioural interventions aimed at reducing exposure to environmental stressors.

By combining expertise in geriatric care, community healthcare, and aging research, PSPV and VHIR contribute to developing evidence-based solutions that support healthy aging and strengthen climate resilience among older adults in Mediterranean communities.
