University of Thessaly

University of Thessaly is a public higher-education and research institution located in central Greece. Founded in 1984, the university has developed into one of the major academic institutions in the country, with campuses distributed across several cities including Volos, Larissa, Karditsa, Trikala, and Lamia.

The university hosts multiple schools and departments covering fields such as engineering, health sciences, environmental studies, agriculture, social sciences, and humanities. Through its strong research capacity and participation in numerous European research and innovation projects, the University of Thessaly contributes to advancing scientific knowledge and addressing societal challenges, particularly in areas related to public health, environmental sustainability, and climate change.

Role in the Project

Within the ISMED-CLIM project, the University of Thessaly plays a key role in the implementation of Living Lab 1 (LL1), which focuses on protecting outdoor workers from climate-related health risks.

The university leads the scientific design and execution of a randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of early warning systems and targeted interventions aimed at reducing exposure to extreme heat and air pollution among outdoor workers. The study is conducted across demonstration sites in Greece and Spain and evaluates how personalized alerts, behavioural recommendations, and technological monitoring tools can reduce health risks associated with climate change.

Through this work, the University of Thessaly contributes to generating scientific evidence on how early warning systems and exposure-reduction measures can protect vulnerable populations and improve climate resilience across the Mediterranean region.
